Go Ask Alice

Alice begins a new school she was hoping that things would be different than her other school. She later meets Beth a classmate. Beth is a great student and has a wonderful family. Although she isn't the most popular girl in school she's still likeable. Alice brings beth over to the house to study. It seems that so far everyone in the family approved of their friendship.

Go ask alice

I have noticed that "alice" is batteling an eating disorder. Alice starves her self. She has lost a lot of weight and still doesn't feel satisfied with her weight. I thought that it would important to do research on  how many young women are batteling some sort of eating disorder. The next paragraph includes some statistics.

Statistics on Eating Disorders

General
Eating disorders, like anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating, are becoming increasingly prevalent throughout western countries. According to US estimates from The National Institute of Mental Health, between 5 per cent and 10 per cent of girls and women (i.e. 5-10 million people) and 1 million boys and men suffer from eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, or other associated dietary conditions. Estimates suggest that as many as 15 percent of young women adopt unhealthy attitudes and behaviors about food.

In addition , I found out some other shocking facts and statistics.

  • An estimated 10 per cent of female college students suffer from a clinical or sub-clinical (borderline) eating disorder, of which over half suffer from bulimia nervosa.
  • An estimated 1 in 100 American women binges and purges to lose weight.
  • Approximately 5 per cent of women and 1 percent of men have anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder.
  • 15 per cent of young women have significantly disordered eating attitudes and behavior.
  • It is estimated that 200,000 to 300,000 Canadian women aged 13 to 40 have anorexia nervosa and twice as many have bulimia.
  • Studies suggest that 5 to 10 percent of people with anorexia or bulimia are males.
  • An estimated 1 in 3 of all dieters develop compulsive dieting attitudes and behaviors.
Of these, one quarter will develop full or partial eating disorders.
  • In the UK, nearly 2 in every 100 secondary school girls suffer from anorexia nervosa,
bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder.
  • Due to the incidence of co-occurring medical conditions, it is almost impossible to specify the morbidity rates for eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia or binge eating. However, general estimates suggest that as many as 10-15 per cent of eating disorders are fatal for those affected.
  • Each day Americans spend an average of $109 million on dieting and diet related products.

Front the start their are signs that "Alice" has some depression problems. She has problems socializing in school and now she gets to start off fresh in a different town.

Go ask alice

While reading this book I got a little curious and wondered what was the deal with this book. I asked my self some questions. Why is this book like a diary? What is the purpose? Is it fiction or non fiction? Why is it anonymous? Those were only a few of the questions I came across while reading. After reading chapter 2 I decided to do some research on the book. I got most of my questions answered. The reason the book looked like a diary was because it was of a teenage girl. The purpose was to let the reader feel emotion. From what i discovered the book was non fiction, it was based on a teen in the 70's.

Go Ask Alice

So far this book seems to be about a high school students diary. In the diary she talks about her family problems and her daily life. "alice" the author of her diary is a teenager with a loving family. Her father got a new job so they're moving. Alice is nervous to start a new life in a new town. It seems to ne that Alice is depressed.
